Bullying and Harassment

Bullying and Harassment

Bullying and harassment are serious workplace problems that can affect anyone, regardless of position or seniority. It involves behaviour that intimidates, humiliates, or undermines a person. Recently, awareness of these issues has grown significantly, and employers are expected to take proactive steps to prevent them. Despite their frequent overlap, there are significant differences between the terms. Bullying typically encompasses repeated or sustained offensive, intimidating, malicious, or insulting behaviour. It may not be linked to any protected characteristic. Harassment, on the other hand, has a specific legal meaning under the Equality Act 2010. It involves unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic—such as sex, race, religion, disability, or age—that violates a person’s dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment.
