To equip all staff with essential awareness, understanding, and confidence to support people with a learning disability and/or autistic people safely, respectfully, and in line with the Oliver McGowan Code of Practice and UK equality and human-rights law.

Overview

By the end of the course, learners will:

• Understand the key characteristics of learning disabilities and autism.
• Recognise how these conditions may affect communication, behaviour, and daily living.
• Identify and apply appropriate reasonable adjustments when supporting individuals.
• Communicate more effectively with people who have a learning disability and/or autism.
• Demonstrate increased confidence in providing safe, person-centred care.
• Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities related to supporting individuals with learning disabilities and autism.
• Apply best practices to prevent misunderstandings and ensure safe, inclusive care.
• Reflect on their attitudes, assumptions, and behaviors to improve professional practice.

Learning Aims & Outcome

This can include a variety of tasks, such as:

• Define what is meant by learning disability and autism and recognise common characteristics and differences.
• Describe the legal and ethical frameworks that protect and promote the rights of autistic people and people with learning disabilities.
• Identify the barriers these individuals face in health and social-care settings and recognise the impact of negative attitudes and assumptions.
• Apply practical communication approaches and reasonable adjustments to improve care interactions.
• Recognise the importance of co-production, listening to lived experience, and promoting person-centred care.
• Reflect on professional responsibilities and how to promote inclusion, safety, and respect in everyday practice.

Duration

Online 2 - 3 Hours

Assesment

The online assessment is taken on completion of the training material. You will be asked 20 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 100%. The answers are marked automatically so you will instantly know whether you have passed. If you don’t pass don’t worry! You can take the test as many times as you need with no extra charge.
