The aim of this course is to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of epilepsy, including its causes, types, signs, and impacts, as well as practical guidance on responding to seizures and supporting individuals with epilepsy in both workplace and community settings. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and confidence to act appropriately during a seizure and to contribute to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

Overview

By the end of the course, learners will:

  • Define epilepsy and describe its causes, prevalence, and impact in the UK.
  • Differentiate between common types of seizures, including focal and generalised seizures, and recognise their signs and symptoms.
  • Identify potential seizure triggers and understand how seizure patterns may vary.
  • Apply appropriate first aid techniques for different types of seizures, including knowing when emergency services should be called.
  • Recognise the emotional, social, and practical challenges faced by people with epilepsy and demonstrate supportive communication and behaviour.
  • Explain relevant UK legislation relating to epilepsy, including the Equality Act 2010 and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • Identify reasonable adjustments and safety measures to support individuals with epilepsy in the workplace.
  • Challenge myths and misconceptions about epilepsy to reduce stigma and promote inclusion.
  • Apply learning to real-world situations through case study analysis and scenario-based reflection.
