Social media refers to online platforms that allow users to create, share, and interact with content, ideas, and communities. Common platforms include Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, WhatsApp, YouTube, LinkedIn, and emerging networks such as Threads. For many people, social media plays an important role in how they communicate, learn, form opinions, seek entertainment, and express themselves.

Overview

By the end of the course, learners will:

  • Understand the benefits, risks, and impact of social media use in both personal and professional contexts.
  • Recognise how online behaviour contributes to a digital footprint and how this can affect safety, reputation, and future opportunities.
  • Learn how to use privacy settings, security features, and responsible posting practices to stay safe online.
  • Identify common online risks such as cyberbullying, grooming, misinformation, scams, and identity theft.
  • Understand safeguarding responsibilities when interacting online, particularly with children, young people, or vulnerable individuals.
  • Develop skills to assess the credibility of online information and avoid sharing harmful or inaccurate content.
  • Promote positive, respectful, and ethical online behaviour within personal and workplace environments.
