Stress is the body’s natural response to any demand or challenge, whether real or perceived. It is a physiological and psychological reaction that occurs when individuals feel they are unable to cope with pressures placed upon them. These pressures—commonly known as stressors—can come from a variety of sources, including work, relationships, financial concerns, or significant life changes. While some stress can be motivating and even beneficial in short bursts (referred to as eustress), chronic or intense stress can have a detrimental impact on a person’s mental and physical health.
At its core, stress is an evolutionary survival mechanism. When a person encounters a threat or challenge, the body activates the "fight, flight or freeze" response, releasing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones increase heart rate, blood pressure, and alertness, preparing the individual to respond quickly. Although this response was highly adaptive for early humans facing physical threats, in modern life it can be triggered by non-life-threatening situations such as public speaking, workload deadlines, or interpersonal conflict.
