Overview

The PPE in Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Laboratories CPD course provides essential awareness of the selection, use and management of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in workplaces where employees may be exposed to chemicals, hazardous substances, pharmaceutical materials or laboratory-related risks. Employees working in chemical manufacturing, pharmaceutical environments, laboratories, research facilities and related industries may encounter substances that can present risks through inhalation, skin or eye contact, accidental splashes, contamination or other forms of exposure. Appropriate control measures, supported by correctly selected PPE, can play an important role in protecting workers.

Why this Training Matters for your Organisation
Providing staff with appropriate understanding and limitations of PPE and how it fits within a wider workplace risk-control strategy. It introduces the importance of risk assessment and COSHH principles, appropriate PPE selection, correct use, inspection, maintenance, storage, cleaning, decontamination and safe disposal where applicable.

Course Content and Learning Outcomes

  • Explain why PPE sits at the bottom of the hierarchy of control under COSHH, and justify relying on it only for residual risk.
  • Interpret a safety data sheet and a workplace exposure limit, and explain why PPE does not appear as a reliable factor in an exposure calculation.
  • Select chemical protective gloves on permeation and breakthrough time, degradation and duration of contact, rather than on thickness, habit or availability.
  • Distinguish between splash goggles, safety spectacles and face shields, and between splash, liquid-tight and gas-tight body protection, and specify the right one for a named task.
  • Specify respiratory protection of the correct type and filter class for a given atmosphere, and identify where only air-fed or self-contained breathing apparatus is adequate.
  • Apply the face fit testing, examination, maintenance and record-keeping duties that attach to respiratory protective equipment and to PPE issue generally.
  • Evaluate PPE arrangements for potent pharmaceutical actives, cytotoxic drugs and biological agents at defined containment levels, including laboratory clothing discipline.
  • Identify the duties owed to limb (b) workers, contractors and visitors after the 2022 amendment, and the records that accompany them.

Duration and Delivery

The course is offered online and can be completed in nearly 2 to 3 hours. Its short, flexible structure makes it appropriate for staff training without substantial distraction to daily activities.
