Course Content and Learning Outcomes

  • Explain why PPE is the last line of defence in extractive work and how it relates to barriers and safety-critical elements.
  • Identify the duties created by the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the PPE at Work Regulations as amended in 2022, and the sector regimes for mines, quarries, borehole sites and offshore installations.
  • Select PPE suitable for a defined extractive task by reasoning from residual exposure to product standard and performance level.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of respiratory, hearing and vibration controls where suppression, filtration or plant design should be carrying the load.
  • Justify the specification of helmets, footwear, eye protection, high-visibility clothing and fall-arrest equipment for named tasks.
  • Apply the layering, laundering and anti-static rules that govern flame-resistant clothing in hydrocarbon service.
  • Distinguish working respiratory protection from escape and rescue equipment, and explain the role of personal gas detection.
  • Apply the issue, inspection, training and record-keeping duties that extend to contractors and agency labour.

Duration and Delivery

The course is offered online and can be completed in nearly 2 to 3 hours. Its short, flexible structure makes it appropriate for staff training without substantial distraction to daily activities. There is the possibility for the course to be modified in accordance with the client, including amendments to its name.

Assessment and Completion

Students complete a 20-question multiple-choice evaluation at the conclusion of the course. A pass mark of 80% is needed, and marks are automatically provided with quick feedback. There is no maximum on how many times the assessment can be repeated to accomplish a pass, with no extra charge.
