Course Content and Learning Outcomes

  • Explain where PPE sits within the hierarchy of control and why it never substitutes for hand hygiene, cleaning, safe sharps handling or ventilation.
  • Identify the duties placed on employers and workers by the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the PPE at Work Regulations 1992 as amended in 2022, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and COSHH 2002.
  • Apply a point-of-care risk assessment to select the minimum effective PPE for a stated care task.
  • Distinguish droplet from airborne transmission and justify the use of a surgical mask, an FFP3 respirator or a powered hood.
  • Evaluate the fit and human factors that determine whether PPE is worn properly, including fit testing, facial hair, sizing and wearing time.
  • Select the correct doffing sequence for a given set of items and explain why doffing is the highest-risk part of the episode.
  • Apply the duty to provide PPE free of charge to bank, agency and limb (b) workers, and explain the supply disciplines behind it.
  • Identify what must be reported under RIDDOR after an occupational exposure and what records a regulated care service should keep.

Duration and Delivery
